Valentines day originated in the Roman times. There was a not so narly dude called Emperor Claudius 2nd, who killed two men both called Valentine. I don’t really know the details, but the Catholic Church decided to make a martyr celebration and thus Valentines day was born.

Despite having quote religious roots, the day itself has gone on to become a rather commercialised commodity. Today, there is huge pressure placed on individuals to spend money on valentines day as a way of proving their commitment or love or whatever it is they are “supposed” to be doing. This is largely pushed by the companies that are trying to sell you “stuff”. The obvious example is cards. The only reason that they are able to sell valentines cards is because of the existence of valentines day, or as it has been often called “Hallmark Day”! Flowers are a big one, roses sell more this time of year than any other time of year apart from mothers day which does win out. Dinners in restaurants become more popular, and some places hike their prices up for the evening to match the demand! This is really not helped by some of the Australia A-listers who have really gone ahead and blown large amounts of money to make sure that they have done valentines day right. Skye Wheatly (see the photo) has taken it very seriously, and Tash Oakley went all the way to Paris with her personal trainer of a boyfriend in order to celebrate the day. There were a lot of photos of red roses!

So with all that pressure to perform, to spend money, to really top the neighbours next door and the other people posting on facebook with what ever it was they received or did, how can you top this? What should you do?

Well firstly, ignore the pressure. If you want to ignore valentines entirely, that is well within your right.
If you do want to do something, that’s great, but don’t feel like you have a standard to keep up to. There is no way that anyone can live up to the fake standard that is portrayed on Instagram and facebook.
Do it your way. Whatever that is. Maybe that is similar to other people, maybe it is flowers and dinner. However, if that is not you, don’t do it. If you thing is rope play and bringing a little kinkiness to the bedroom, then do that. Don’t flake out on what is true to yourself

So if you are going to do valentines do it your way, not someone else's way.
Tue, 20 Feb 2018 09:22:40 +0000 EdBennett 6625 at https://www.f-buddy.com https://www.f-buddy.com/australia/blog/valentines-day-australia#comments Valentines day - corporate agenda, genuinely lovely or a way of lying to yourself? https://www.f-buddy.com/ireland/blog/valentines-day-corporate-agenda-genuinely-lovely-or-way-lying-yourself

20 Feb 2018 - 09:20 | Tags: valentines day, sex and capitalism

Valentines day has come around again, and it is amazing how polarised peoples view on Valentines day is. Some people see it as pure capitalism, an excuse to make money by the companies that provide dating related services. On Valentines day, the cost of dinner in a restaurant spikes, the sales of flowers for delivery spike upwards in a way that is only surpassed by the increase in flower sales by mothers day, and there is a whole industry of greets cards that only exist because of this day. One of my more cynical friends once said to me “happy hallmark day” – in a direct reference to the fact that the people that seem to gain the most from the presence of a Valentines Day seems to be the card creators! They get a trickle of work ongoing from birthdays and weddings, but the rush periods without a doubt are Christmas and new years… what better way to create an extra rush day than by supporting an arbitrary day which puts social pressure on people to spend money on cards? Can’t be too bad for the postal service either, I do wonder how much extra postage work that Valentines day creates for them.

The counter to this is always made that this is an excellent time to celebrate love, that it is all about cherishing the one you are with, and reminds you to never take them for granted. Pardon me for a moment whilst I throw up in a corner! I have noticed that all of these people tend to be in long term relationships. Some of them are newly entered in it and are in the loved up phase of things, and for those people it is all roses and sunshine! The other person can do no wrong, and actually I truly believe that for them they are buying their own sale pitch, so I don’t mind it. Others however, have been in relationships for a much longer period of time, and for some of these people they are using it as a way of trying to fool themselves, to try and convince themselves that things are better than they actually are, that all is well in the world. It is a way of glossing over the dead relationship, and the lack of sex life. They play it in the hopes that when that get laid that one night of the year (after so long a break of not) it will be like everything is as sparky as it was when it first started.

No matter which camp you are in, whether you see Valentines day as a good or bad thing, I hope that you have as good a one as possible.
Tue, 20 Feb 2018 09:20:58 +0000 EdBennett 6624 at https://www.f-buddy.com https://www.f-buddy.com/ireland/blog/valentines-day-corporate-agenda-genuinely-lovely-or-way-lying-yourself#comments
