Is casual dating in Australia easier then everywhere else?

That’s a hard question to answer. The US often boasts about their casual dating scene being top class with women and men each dating different people every week (some every night). The UK has experienced a huge internet dating revolution where even the shyest of poms can score several dates over the week. In Europe dating varies from country to country with Italians promenading up and down the streets checking one another out, whilst the Germans busy themselves drinking in groups and enjoying the nights seeing where they’ll end up. Australia has a reputation for being chilled out and relaxed with a casual atmosphere in place almost everywhere. But when it comes to casual dating Aussies do things a little differently to America and Europe.

Ozzie rules
In the US no one thinks anything of it when a guy asks a girl out on the street. In Australia however people look at you with a raised eyebrow and a quickened step if you ask them out on the street. We prefer things to grow a bit more casually in social settings. So what does that mean when it comes to sex?

Well the good news is that Aussies aren’t always looking for meaningful relationships. A study conducted by SheKnows Australia showed that 26% of men and only 13% of women are looking for a committed relationship. The casual trend is found mostly in the cities so if you’re looking for a quick hook up they are the places to head.

Drinking is pretty big in Aus as well. Most respondents to a survey we conducted cited drinking and hanging out in bars were among their top interests. So if you’re looking for a casual hook up then heading to a bar or club is a good bet. Interestingly though the top thing that Australian women want is for a guy to make the first move whether it comes to a date or sex. Many complain about Australian guys “taking forever” to ask a girl out or kiss her. It might also explain why Australian women have a reputation for being so forward.

With all this in mind here are a few guidance notes to help you out in casual dating:

DO make the first move. Women hate waiting.
DON’T come on too strong. Casual is key.
DO share costs if you go for dinner.
DON’T take yourself too seriously.

Dating isn’t harder in Australia. It’s just more casual and a bit different.
